Choosing the Right Preschool

A good preschool is not the fanciest building. It is a place where children feel safe, curious, and respected.

Choosing a preschool can feel overwhelming. Visiting classrooms with these questions in mind can help you see past glossy brochures.

What to look for

Warm interactions. Do teachers get down to children’s level and speak respectfully?
Time to play. Is there a balance of free play, guided activity, and outdoor time?
Outdoor space. Do children move their bodies every day?
Predictable routines. Are transitions calm and unhurried?
Family communication. Does the school see parents as partners?

Red flags

Heavy emphasis on worksheets and rote memorisation.
Children sitting for long periods without choice.
Teachers speaking mostly in commands.
No outdoor time or noisy, chaotic transitions every day.

Trust your child

Watch how your child responds during the visit. Do they seem curious and safe? A school that fits your child’s temperament matters as much as the curriculum.

The right preschool does not push children ahead. It meets them where they are.
